Successful container gardening starts with the right setup. Good drainage, an appropriate potting mix, and thoughtful plant selection will help your containers stay healthy and attractive throughout the season.

Drainage and Soil

·       Use a container with drainage holes whenever possible to prevent root rot.

·       If the container does not have drainage holes, add a layer of coarse material at the bottom to improve water flow.

·       Avoid leaf mulch, which can retain moisture, become soggy, and encourage mold.

·       For better drainage, use a few pinecones and a small amount of pine straw beneath the soil.

·       Choose an all-purpose potting mix that contains peat moss, perlite, and pine bark.

·       If your potting mix does not include fertilizer, you can add a small amount of Miracle- Gro.

Plant Selection and Arrangement

·       Starting with young plants is usually easier and more reliable than growing from seed.

·       Create a balanced arrangement with a thriller as the tall focal plant, fillers around it, and spillers that trail over the edges.

·       Place containers where they will receive the appropriate amount of sunlight.

·       Select plants with similar light and water requirements so they can thrive together.
